Nokia started a new trend by launching rebooted models of its classic phones like Nokia 3310 and The Banana phone, and this time news has come from the house of Motorola, Lenovo-owned Motorola might be bringing back its famous Razr series. Many new generation readers don’t have any clue what Razr phone actually is and what respect do it hold among techiest. So, in this article I will brief you about the Razr phone series and why Motorola is planning to bring this classic beauty back from ashes.
The Razr Series
Just like Nokia, Motorola was one of the biggest players in phone market in early 2000 and then Motorola played a big game and stumped out other mobile manufacturers by introducing The Motorola Razr V3 in the third quarter of 2004, which became a major hit because of its classic and unique design. It created such hype like iPhones create these days. Razr created a new trend and became a style statement.
Motorola's Razr V3s the best looking flip phone ever.

It was the thinnest phone of its time, with an electroluminescent keypad carved using a single metal wafer and packed in a clamshell set. A 2.2-inch display with a pixel density of 170*220 pixels, supported with 0.3 MP primary VGA camera and powered by a 680mAh Li-ion battery which was able to give a standby time of 280 hours and a talk time of up to seven hours. Motorola joined hands with Apple that’s why Razr V3 also supported iTunes. For data transfer it had standard mini-USB which was bundled with headphones but surprisingly it didn’t support a 3.5 mm headphone jack just like todays flagship smartphone.
It was launched at a price of around 100 euros and around 50 million units were sold at this price, but in 2006 Motorola lowered the price of Razr V3 and it broke all sales records by becoming the bestselling clamshell phone with around 130 million units sold and it still holds the record.
Razr series was marketed until July 2007 as its later models were not so successful and were not such a hit as original Razr phone and this happened because Motorola failed to keep up with fast changing world of world of technology where 3G and touchscreen smartphones were taking its toll.
At Mobile World Congress 2018, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing said “With new technology, particularly foldable screens, I think you will se more and more innovation on our smartphone design,” he was quoted as saying “So hopefully what you just described (The Razr Brand) will be developed or realised very soon”. But one question still prevails i.e. when this news is going to get true? As at MWC 2017 also Yuan Yuanquing made an equivalent statement.
Personal Review
It is really amazing to see that big companies like Nokia and Motorola are working on bringing back the essence of past to present world so that we can relive the past. But the question is will Motorola launch the Razr smartphone or will follow Nokia’s footstep by launching a rebooted version of Razr. But I am really very excited to see what Motorola will do and whether the new Razr phone will be able to beat original Razr in terms of looks, feel and especially sales.
